About Kezia A. Hatfield, LMFT
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology through Azusa Pacific University. I specialize in treating complex trauma. My training and experience include the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotion Focused Therapy for Complex Trauma, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Experiential Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), strength-based therapies, attachment-based therapies, play and art therapies, and trauma-informed care for survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation, trafficking and prostitution, domestic violence, military sexual assault, foster care, childhood abuse and neglect, and attachment traumas. I carry deep within me a faith for the healing process and a belief that people are beautifully resilient and inherently worthy of love.
Trauma and Therapy
The human capacity is incredible. It can lead us to believe we don’t need support. The truth is we are not meant to survive everything alone. We are worth the investment of care. Many of us have experienced trauma that is hidden beneath our competencies. We get blindsided when the past intrudes on our present. Sometimes we feel like we are an audience to our own life instead of living it. Relationships and life decisions seem chaotic and we feel a loss of control. We find ourselves sabotaging good things and not being sure why. Despite our best efforts to “move forward” we feel stuck in patterns, flashbacks, body memories, or survival instincts like fight/flight/freeze. These used to serve us well, but now can prevent us from experiencing personal growth and meaningful relationships.
There is hope.
Therapy is an environment that is committed to pursuing safety and trust, respect and boundaries, growth and challenge, compassion and authenticity, and holistic peace. Within this space, I seek to learn from you and bear witness to your experiences as we collaborate toward your desired goals. Remembering painful events and becoming aware of feelings attached to those events can bring on strong emotions of anger, sadness, grief, shame, fear, along with other complex and often conflicted feelings. Healing is a process with many layers and requires time and patience. Vulnerability is oftentimes counter-intuitive to survival and yet it is essential for true intimacy in relationships. In recovery, the goal changes from what we are getting away from (safe absence) and becomes more of what we are heading toward (safe presence). Though the prospect may feel daunting, it is possible.
As your therapist, I commit to the best of my ability to support you; understand and listen; respond with kindness; validate your physical, emotional, and spiritual rights as a human being; empower a personal sense of worthiness, purpose, and connection; challenge the patterns and beliefs you want to change; provide tools for reprocessing, regulating, and expressing emotion; as well as to help bring clarity to what it is you desire for yourself and your relationships.
